Choosing the right exterior colours for your home can sometimes feel like an overwhelming task, and this post is dedicated to giving you some quick tips for planning your exterior colour palette (we’re talking windows, doors and siding colours).
Let’s start with some initial thought processes and steps.
Tip # 1
Your exterior colour selections need to complement the fixed elements of your home: if you have brick/stone, perhaps you just installed a new roof (or aren’t planning to replace the roof anytime soon), wood features etcetera; the colour of your windows, doors, soffits, fascia, eavestrough, railings and columns (if you have them) need to flow with these elements. Something to keep in mind is that sometimes the colours that will flow/complement our homes the best are not necessarily the colours we gravitate towards. For example, someone with a brown brick bungalow and brown roof, should not install slate grey soffits, fascia and eavestroughs even though slate grey might be the colour they like best.
Tip # 2
Really figure out what you’re willing to change and what you’re not willing to change: say you recently moved into a new house, and it has brand new windows, but the colour of the windows might not be your preference. Are you willing to replace the brand-new windows, or can you find a way to work the colour into your new colour scheme? Are you willing to do some painting if needed? Examples like these are good things to keep in mind.
Tip #3
Start with one element and go from there: choose the largest element and pick some colours you really love from the options available. From the colours you love, narrow down what matches the best with your house. Some elements might be an easy no brainier choice. So, for example, if you know you want black windows, that’s where you should start.
